Training Bulletin No.3

Nebulisation Hazard

Another isolated incident has occurred in another part of the NHS. The purpose of this bulletin is to bring it to the attention of staff.

Unleaded petrol was substituted for Salbutamol Nebules whilst the patient was being given oxygen driven nebulisation, and as one of the crew was smoking, an explosion occurred.

This resulted in the death of the patient.

Staff should be aware that it is possible to put petrol in a nebulisation mask, and whilst this and smoking are incompatible with current Protocols, it is imperative that staff check to ensure that this does not occur.

There is no clinical evidence available to suggest that Unleaded fuel would have less detrimental side-effects than Four Star, stocks of which are being withdrawn from sale after January 1st 2000, though you will get more Premier Points at Argos Training Bulletin 130 / 2000
